International Day of Sign Languages 2019
The International Day of Sign Language is a part of the International Week of the Deaf which starts on the September 24th and goes on until the September 30th. Many organisations and N.G.O.’s celebrate this week as the occasion to commemorate the unity of the Deaf community. Theme of International Day of Sign Languages
The Federation National of the Deaf, France organised the WFD Congress last summer, the theme is about Sign Language Rights for all. If simply put, this theme talks about actions and future plans in lieu of protecting the rights of the deaf community from all over the world. These rights are important because deaf people face many kinds of obstacles as compared to the other strata of the society. Initially, the theme of the International Day of Sign Languages 2018 was ” With Sign Language, everyone is included.”

In lieu of spreading awareness, the United Nations also has designated a special logo to commemorate the International Day of Sign Languages 2019. The logo shows two hands expressing sign language and encircling the entire world. Why is International Day of Sign Languages Celebrated
The inception of the International Day of Sign Language dates back to the year 2018, the date for which is September 23rd which actually commemorates the origins of the World Federation of the Deaf. It was actually because of the efforts of the W.F.D, that we celebrate the International of the Sign Languages today.
What is W.F.D : The abbreviation refers to the World Federation of the Deaf which is a community of 135 communities representing the deaf community & representing 70 million people alike.
Besides the one day celebration, the W.F.D also celebrates International Week of the Deaf the origin of which dates back to the year 1958. The advocacy proposed the celebration of the International Day of Sign Languages to promote to the use of sign language, development and access of the sign language. It also aims to bag equal status for the same.
