The Sunrisers Hyderabad took on Kolkata Knight Riders in a match that was to determine a lot in the points table – 1)KKR win made them qualify for playoffs 2) Sunrisers Hyderabad win guaranteed them a place in top 2 in the playoffs and 3) KKR loss meant qualification of RCB even if they lost to Delhi Daredevils in the 2nd match of the day.
In a match so crucial, KKR lost the toss and were put into bat first. KKR made the change of excluding Morne Morkel and playing the extra batsman in Colin Munro, also bringing in Kuldeep Yadav for Piyush Chawla. The Sunrisers Hyderabad made one change of including Williamson for Morgan.

KKR needed their openers to fire and they got off to a fine start with 33-0 in 3.3 overs but Uthappa couldn’t last any longer and got out playing an unrequired big shot and chipping the ball to mid-off after a 25 in 17. In quick succession, KKR lost 2 more wickets that of Munro and their captain Gambhir – putting them at grave risk of a collapse at 57-3.
KKR were showing unnecessary urgency in their shot making which gave an indication that they were trying too hard to score too fast – not a sensible strategy in such a crucial match. There was though some sensibility shown by Yusuf Pathan and Manish Pandey – putting up an 87 run partnership for the 4th wicket.
Pandey departed after making a 30 ball 48 and Yusuf after 34 ball 52 but its fair to say that they did their job, the duo guided KKR’s total to some sort of respectability and gave them a great chance of making the playoffs, their 87 run partnership guided KKR to 171-6 at the end of 20 overs.
Hyderabad’s opening stands have been rather ordinary this season with Dhawan having a very inconsistent IPL and the bulk of their scoring comes from their opener and captain in David Warner. Hyderabad lost their first wicket at the score of 28 runs; it was a big blow as the wicket was of their captain who departed for 18 in 16 balls.
Frustratingly for Sunrisers Hyderabad they had a chase wherein only one batsman looked like in a place to score runs whereas the batsmen at the other end were getting in and getting out – without showing the needed application. Ojha for 15, Yuvraj for 19, Williamson for 7, Hooda for 2 and Henriques for 11 sums up Hyderabad’s struggle in the middle order – the only positive was in Dhawan’s batting who fought hard and made 51 in 30 balls.
Hyderabad’s abject failure in the middle order didn’t allow them to go at the required run rate and hence they were left with 29 runs in the last over which was always going to be tough with 7 down. Hyderabad lost 1 wicket in the last over and could only manage 6 runs – Kolkata Knight Riders were therewith secured a place in the top 4 and made the playoffs with 8 wins to their name.
