The birth of Lord Krishna is considered as a very big festival for all the Hindus, but how many of you know the history of the festival of Krishna Janmashtami ? Well, here we have a brief of Krishna Janmashtami festival for you. There was a place in India known as Mathura, where there was no freedom but immense amount of evil everywhere. Lord Krishna was born to Vasudeva and Devki who was sister to Kansa who was indeed the evil king of Mathura. It was predicted that the 8th son of Devki and Vasudeva would kill King Kansa. Kansa immediately locked his sister and brother in law in prison and treated them brutally. He killed seven of Devki’s babies but when Lord Krishna, eighth son was born, every lock and gate opened upon itself and Lord Krishna’s father Vasudeva carried him on his head and left him with his friend Nanda keeping in mind his safety. Lord Krishna, eventually killed Kansa and freed the world from his devilish desires.

Since then, the day of Lord Krishna’s birth is conserved as Krishna Janmashtami and is considered as one of the most auspicious day in the mankind’s history. Lord Krishna is the only truth in the world. He lives in the heart of every living entity. There are various devotees of Lord Krishna all over the world and hence Janmashtami is celebrated in different ways everywhere.

Lord Krishna Janmashtami is quite a fun festival for all the Krishna devotees because Lord Krishna was himself very playful. There is pomp and show everywhere. People observe the festival by keeping a fast, dancing, singing Krishna Bhajans and songs. There is also a ritual of Dahi Handi where a group of people make a pyramid to break the pot of yogurt hung at a height. It is believed that Lord Krishna used to steal butter the same way.

Several kinds of traditional Janmashtami food is also prepared and offered to Lord Krishna at midnight and a beautiful swing is made for the little Krishna. Just as the clock strikes 12, everyone starts making merry and sing Krishna Bhajans so as to please the god. The temples are all decorated with pretty flowers and bells to celebrate the auspicious occasion.

Several plays and dramas also take place in communities, small kids are dressed as Lord Krishna and Radha and look extremely adorable. Since, the festival of Janmashtami marks the birth of Lord Shri Krishna, people should pray to him for mercy and thank him for always being there when they needed them. The basic mantra of Krishna consciousness is “Hare Krishna Hare Rama”. Chanting this, you will feel more closer to Lord Krishna.
