Mumbai Indian won by 80 runs
Toss went in Delhi’s favor who opted to chase, bringing in spinners Nadeem, Zaheer and Tahir came back into the side. Whereas Mumbai Indians made the two changes of bringing IN Vinay Kumar and Martin Guptill.
Mumbai Indians tried their 5th opening pair of the season which highlights their struggle at the top order; with Parthiv having a very out of touch IPL season, Unmukt Chand too failed as an opener and therefore Guptill was brought back into the side.
The opening duo finally clicked to an extent, with Rohit and Guptill having an opening partnership of 46 runs before Rohit Sharma got out for 31. Guptill went on and made a 42 ball 48, quite acceptable considering that the man at the other end – K Pandya was in an absolutely brutal form.
In the 19 deliveries that Pandya faced of spinners (Nadeem, Mishra, Tahir) he smashed 69 runs. It’s an irony that prior to the beginning of this IPL season, everyone knew his brother who represented India in the recently concluded t20 world cup i.e. Hardik Pandya and now he finds himself on the bench and K Pandya played an absolute blinder – the eyes of the selector surely would be on him.
K Pandya made a 37 ball 86 which included 7 fours and 6 sixes. It was this quick run making that got Mumbai Indians’ score past the 200 run mark, getting to 206 in 20 overs at the fall of 4 wickets.
Delhi in their chase needed to be vibrant, aggressive from the beginning wouldn’t have worked but they needed Quinton De Kock to fire, like he did against RCB earlier this season for Delhi Daredevils middle order is fairly inexperienced and unless they got a good start; getting anywhere close to the target was a tough ask.
Apart from De Kock’s 40 off 28, the rest of the top order collapsed without troubling the scorers – 8, 8 and 6 is all that Mayank Agarwal, Nair and Samson could manage respectively.
Pant showed some resistance with his 17 ball 23 but in a chase of beyond 200, starts do not matter unless you convert them into big scores – at least a 50 or 60 in quick time. De Kock fell in 9th over, Duminy in 13th and Pant in the same over – goes to show that Delhi Daredevils just couldn’t control the flurry of wickets that fell in bunches; 2 mini collapses of sorts – 3 at the top and then 3 in the middle order and once you lose 6 wickets in a bunch, there’s really no way to get back into the match.
The constant fall of wickets resulted in Delhi Daredevils succumbing to just 126 (all out) in 19.1 overs, a one-sided victory for the Mumbai Indians that keeps them in the hunt to make the playoffs. Delhi Daredevils too remain alive with 6 wins in 11 matches, 3 to go.
