History of the National Authors Day

As stated above the origins of the National Authors Day dates back to the year 1928 when Nellie Verne Burt McPherson who was one of the members of the Illinois book club decided to get a day dedicated in lieu of appreciation towards authors. While Nellie was a teacher, she was an avid reader too. It was during her stay in the hospital wherein she read Eben Holden’s Last Day A’ Fishin by Irvings Bacheller.

She was so overjoyed and impressed with the author that she actually sent a letter appreciating him. She received a photographed copy of another book he had written as a return gift. But Nellie was not convinced with this mere appreciation of the author hence suggested the General Federation of Women’s Club to make the National Authors Day official. Finally after 20 years, the United States Department of Commerce designated November 1 of every year to be celebrated as the National Authors Day
