Union health ministry proposed to setup All India Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (AIIMS) in Punjab, Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh last year. This proposal as been approved in the Union Budget 2015 – 2016.
The country is now set to have 12 AIIMS.
The Punjab government had proposed three sites of 200 acres each in Kapurthala last year and sent a detailed report to the Centre, said Vini Mahajan, principal secretary health.
Last year Rs 500 crore were allocated for four more AIIMS-like institutions at Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal, Maharashtra and Poorvanchal. At present, under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana, six AIIMS are functioning and the other two are about to start.
