India’s test captain vs India’s ODI captain i.e. Rising Pune Supergiants vs Royal Challengers Bangalore marked the 35th match of IPL 2016. Winning the toss, RCB put Pune into bat.
A change in RCB side which came in as surprise was excluding Chris Gayle – the explosive West Indian batsman who has the power to change the course of a match singlehandedly was left out of the side. Shamsi and Aravind were also left out. IN CAME Travis Head, Chris Jordan and Parvez Rasool.
The Pune side in spite of being on a losing streak still didn’t give Irrfan Pathan a chance to showcase his talent. The changes that they did make were Adam Zampa and RP Singh for M Ashwin and Scot Boland.
Royal Challengers Bangalore | vs | Rising Pune Supergiants |
Date | 07 May 2016 | |
Venue | M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru
195/3 (19.3) | 191/6 (20)
Royal Challengers won by 7 wickets |
Pune’s innings started with a horrific run-out in form of Usman Khawaja, it was the fault on both end from Rahane, who gave an unclear indication for a run and Khawaja who showed poor judging skills to make whether a single was available or not. Pune were 26-1.
The next batsman in was Saurabh Tiwary. It’s fair to say that from overs 6-10, the RCB made great lapses in the field – Binny dropping Tiwary, then Sachin baby dropping the same batsman, followed by lapses at the boundary and even Villiers making a mistake to give away a 4 – RCB captain was visibly disappointed with the inapt performance from his side in the field.
These very lapses in the field gave Tiwary the life-line to go on and score a fifty, the partnership between Rahane and him lasted for 106 runs, which meant that Pune were on the verge of a good score but a collapse in the middle order pulled back the scoring rate.
From 132-2 in 14 overs, Pune reached to 191 in their 20 overs; with the last over going for 17 runs. Had it not been for Rahane’ 74, Pune really lacked any sort of stability in the middle order that is much required to give stability to scoring – 9, 14, 0, 9, 10 is what sums up Pune’s middle order.
RCB’s chase was marked by one man and one man alone – Virat Kohli, someone who has become habitual of winning matches for his side with his individual brilliance.
The tactics from RCB were clear in the first 6 – don’t lose early wickets and build a strong opening stand, ensuring that a chase of over 9 to the over is not hit by early wickets because then, the match is over before it even begins.
Kolhi’s 108* is his second century this season and it’s a great indication of his phenomenal run of form even in the t20 format. Apart from him, Rahul’s 38 was crucial in laying a foundation for Villier to come in and capitalize upon – but it didn’t quite translate into that, Villiers got out for only 1.
Watson’s 36 in 13 balls came as the last fiery blow to Pune’s hopes of winning the match. Kohli’s century remains the highlight of the day for RCB – classy, elegant and aggressive, the 108 came in just 58 balls and included 8 fours and 7 sixes – the win puts RCB confident of having a strong chance of making the playoffs.
