Sunrisers Hyderabad vs Kolkata Knight Riders [IPL 2016 Eliminator Match |25 May 2016] Match Highlights

The first eliminator of Vivo IPL 2016 took place at Feroz Shah Kotla with the Delhi boy returning home but leading the Kolkata Knight Riders. Hyderabad too had a Delhi boy playing for them in Shikhar Dhawan – in reality the Delhi fans had the option of choosing their favorite but in a match as crunch as this, there are no favorites – everyone wants a good game of cricket.

Sunrisers Hyderabad vs Kolkata Knight Riders
Date 25 May 2016
Venue Feroz Shah Kotla
162/8 (20)   140/8 (20)
Royal Challengers won by 4 wickets

Gambhir won the toss and KKR opted to bowl first. Russell still hadn’t recovered from his injury and thus Morkel got another go, Sathish too was brought into the side in place of Ankit Rajpoot – Shakib missed out. Sunrisers Hyderabad got Cuttings back for Williamson and Bipul Sharma for Karn Sharma.

As much as Sunrisers Hyderabad would’ve wanted a strong opening partnership to unfold, Dhawan’s aggressive striking could only continue till he reached 10, at which point yet another attempt at playing the ball over slip for a possible boundary off Morkel’s pace short-pitched line didn’t formulate as planned and his stumps were shattered.

Warner who’s been instrumental to Hyderabad’s consistency this season didn’t look going at his usual style and made a run a ball 28. Hyderabad found the scoreboard ticking with Henriques 21 ball 31 and Yuvraj’s 30 ball 44. Yuvraj’s big hitting in the last few overs of the innings guided Hyderabad post the 130, after which Hooda’s 13 ball 21 came in at a crucial point which helped Hyderabad get to 150.

Even though they lost Cutting, Ojha and Bhuvneshwar for 8 runs combined, the newly included member in the side, Bipul Sharma’s 14 in 6 balls got Hyderabad to 162 eventually in their 20 overs.

Kolkata in their revert saw yet another quiet appearance from Uthappa who could only manage 11 – it’s fair to say that he’s had a rather quiet IPL and it’s his out of form that has cost KKR the most at the top which has made them vulnerable to getting off to a good start.

Upon the fall of Uthappa, the New Zealander in Munro made his way into the middle and things started to look positive for KKR – at 53-1 after 6.5 overs but an ill-timed wrong run call from Gambhir on the last ball of the over saw Hyderabad seeing the back of Munro who departed for 16, a match-turning run out one might say.

Yusuf didn’t trouble the scorers either as he went for just 2. At 69-4, KKR were now looking to get a partnership forming in the middle on which Manish Pandey and Surya Kumar Yadav delivered, establishing a 56 run partnership after which Surya Kumar departed for 23. After the fall of Surya, the last thing KKR wanted was to lose the settled Manish Pandey but things didn’t go in there favor and out went Pandey for 36 in the hunch to play the big shots – KKR dugout said it all, they were now very much out of the match.

Sathish and Holder couldn’t do much in the last 2 overs as they needed 40+ off Mustafizur’s 19th over and Bhuvaneshwar Kumar’s 20th over which was going to be a tough ask. Kolkata Knight Riders only got to 140 in their 20, losing the match by 22 runs and therewith ending their Vivo IPL 2016 campaign.
