The first day of the championships 2016 turned out to be a cake-walk for the higher seeds as the day pretty much secured 2nd round births for all the major top seeds, with a relatively comfortable or a win nevertheless to start-off their Wimbledon 2016 campaign.

Novak Djokovic vs James Ward

CENTRE COURT – GENTLEMEN’S SINGLES – 1R

The day began with the world no.1 seed in ATP – Novak Djokovic taking the center stage against the home-boy in Ward, the latter having never won a grand slam or ATP major, Djokovic was the clear favorite. Djokovic demolished his opponent in the first set 6-0, a game just perfect to break for the British, the Serbian looked like he’s in a hurry to finish off and get into the next round. The 2nd set however saw Ward a little more competitive (which the home fans relished) by breaking Djokovic’s serve but that to wasn’t enough as he lost in the tie-break 7-6 (6-3), once the tie-break went in favor of Djokovic and him 2-0 up, coming back into the match was a mammoth task, something Ward couldn’t manage and lost the last set 6-4 (with one break of service).

Venus Williams vs Donna Vekic

NO.1 COURT – LADIES’ SINGLES – 1R

Venus Williams, who once saw great glories at these very courts of Wimbledon, has since the last 5-6 years gone away from the limelight with her sister in Serena Williams taking all the slams in her bag. Venus’ age is not in her favor and while she still continues to be in the circuit, she has a grand slam missing from her tally since the last 6 years. Venus faced Donna Vekic in her 1st round clash with the first-set going into the tie-break which Venus won 7-6(7-3), the second saw Vekic’s serve getting broken which was just enough to for Venus to squeeze past her and record her first victory in Wimbledon 2016. Venus at 36 is the oldest player in the women’s draw.

Garbine Muguruza vs Camila Giorgi

CENTRE COURT – LADIES’ SINGLES – 1R

Last year’s finalist and this year’s French Open women’s singles champion in Muguruza also qualified into the next round but in a scare 3 sets. Giorgi from Italy showed tough resistance against Muguruza but lost 6-2 7-5 6-4.

Kei Nishikori vs Sam Groth

NO.1 COURT – GENTLEMEN’S SINGLES – 1R

Groth vs Nishikori clash was expected to treat the tennis fans with some glorying tennis action but it couldn’t be as Nishikori was at the peak of his sublime game – too hot for Groth to handle. The Japan tennis star won in 3 sets 6-4 6-3 7-5.

Milos Raonic vs Pablo Carreno Busta

NO.2 COURT – GENTLEMEN’S SINGLES – 1R

John McCenroe – the passionate, aggressive and ever so controversial tennis star from the 1980’s has turned coach this year alongside his commentating duties for BBC. McCenroe is coaching the Canadian tennis star in Milos Raonic who has improved his game drastically in the last 4 years and emerges as one of the possible players to qualify for semi’s this year (maybe even final and win). In his first round clash, Raonic’s overcame his opponent in Carreno Busta from Spain in 3 sets 7-6 (7-4), 6-2 6-4. Raonic thanked McCenroe’s presence at the court which gave the player “positive energy”.

Roger Federer vs Guido Pella

CENTRE COURT – GENTLEMEN’S SINGLES – 1R

The day’s best show was reserved as the last show with the ever-so-popular Roger Federer stepping onto the Wimbledon courts against 52nd seed Pella from Argentina. A contest that was foreseen as to be one-sided was rather competitive in the first 2 sets with both the sets going into tie-breakers, there were many wow moments for Federer fans but moments of equal disappointment at Federer’s little roughness due to lack of match practice was visible. The Swiss won the first set 7-6 (7-5), won second 7-6 (7-3) and broke the Argentinian twice to seize the match 6-3.
