Wimbledon 2016 Day 4 Results

The day 4 at Wimbledon 2016 got into the crackling phase of the “upsets”, with this year’s championship seeing it’s first share of some of the top seeds from the men and women draw bidding adieu to the tournament. Upsets not only make the audience more engaged in the matches but they also force the players to bring their A game to the court and with the Wimbledon now eyeing the starting of the 3^rd round; a mistake here and a mistake there can CRUSH the dreams at the title.

Jana Cepelova vs Garbine Muguruza

A world no. 124 vs world no.2 in women’s draw was seen as a fairly uncompetitive match from the point-of-view of Muguruza- ranked no.2 in the world, this year’s French champion and last year’s Wimbledon finalist. The reality was – on court one, Capelova was crushing the world no.2 and Muguruza’s fans were in great dismay at what they were witnessing – she was purely looking down and out from game one. Thrashing Muguruza, Capelova won the match 6-3 6-2 and sets up her next round clash with Safarova.

Grigor Dimitrov vs Gilles Simon

Another upset came in the men’s draw wherein currently out of the top 50 seeding, Grigor Dimitrov took on the 16^th seed Gilles Simon – someone who has this very year taken matches to the 5^th set with Djokovic and therefore Simon started off as a clear favorite. Dimitrov though started the first set aggressively and with a timely serve, he ensured a break of service from Simon – winning the set 6-3. The next set was pure neck and neck and with no break of serve, it went into a tie-break. In the tie-break, Simon was absolutely demolished by Dimitrov’s serving who won 7-6 (7-1). The third set saw Simon breaking Dimitrov twice and just about surviving in the match with 6-3 win in the 3^rd set. The 4^th set was 4-4 and another tie-break loomed but Dimitrov broke Simon and won his serve to complete a marvelous victory.

Stat : Dimitrov beat Murray in 2014 Wimbledon Quarter-Final and reached the Semi’s. An injury has caused him drastic drop of rankings.

Jiri Vesely vs Dominic Thiem

Dominic Thiem – 22 year old 8^th seed in the world, tennis star from Austria saw his dream of Wimbledon title crushed by the qualification entry of Vesely. A contest wherein every single chance had great meaning, neither of the two player could afford to take it easy and let the game carry with it’s momentum, especially not the higher seed in Thiem as all along the match – Vesely seemed to have the upper hand. 3 sets, 3 set of tie-breaks and glorying tennis action lasting all across the match’s duration, the end result was another upset with the no.8 seed Thiem booking his ticket back to Austria and Vesely qualifying into the next round with 7-6(4) 7-6(5) 7-6 (3) win.

Andy Murray vs Yen Hsun Lu

The home-boy and the no.2 seed in the men’s draw, Andy Murray continued his sheer dominance on grass with a cruising victory against Lu from Taiwan. The Scottish kept breaking Lu’s serve with ease and there was very little exertion through the match from his side; Lu clearly was no competition to the current form that Murray is in – and with the kind of fitness he possesses which enables him great court reach, Murray looks in formidable form. 6-3 6-2 6-1 read the match score-line and Murray qualifies for the 3^rd round.
