Wimbledon 2016 Day 5 Results

The day 5^th of the Wimbledon saw almost a delay of around 2 hours before the play started on the center court under a closed roof. Majority of the day’s completed matches were played on the center court as the rain almost extended through the day.

Nick Kyrgios vs Dustin Brown

The first match was set to be a fiery encounter between 2 similar players in style – Nick Kyrgios and Dustin Brown, aggressive and lazy elegance like seen in no 2 other players in the tennis circuit, the match was expected to go all the way and it did.

The match lasted 5 sets and while all the tennis fans are aware of Kyrgios’ exemplary maestro style of tennis at just 21 years of age, the equally candy treat to the eyes was the play of Dustin Brown – with his Becker style volleys, drop shots and leaping. Brown is ranked 85 while Kyrgios is ranked 19 but the contest was one that was being fought with same level of competitiveness from both ends.

Brown won the first set tie-break but he wasn’t able to continue with the momentum in the second set and gave Kyrgios the room to come back into the match. The 2^nd set was Kyrgios’, the 3^rd was an epic outburst of anger from Kyrgios (as expected) – a few hot words with umpire and the Australian was fired to win the 4^th, which he did. The 5^th was tied at 3-3 when rain arrived and when the players returned, Kyrgios broke Brown and retained his serve, winning the match 6-7 6-1 2-6 6-4 6-4.

Stan Wawrinka vs Juan Martin Del Potro 

The next match on the court was between Stan Wawrinka (ranked 4^th) and Juan Martin Del Potro (Argentinian currently seeded outside top 100). Potro was 2009 US Open winner but lost his rankings due to a long injury.

Potro’s impeccable serve and ability to play out long rallies was playing to the weakness of Wawrinka – whose backhand was getting complicated and the service that we familiarize with top seeds was completely out of sync. Wawrinka had only a few glimpses of his championship triumph at last year’s French Open.

Wawrinka won the 1^st set but from that point on, it was a moment of downhill. Once the 1^st set was done and over with, Potro’s fierce game absolutely outshone the opponent; winning 3-6 6-7 (2) 3-6.

Roger Federer vs Daniel Evans

Federer was the next Swiss taking the center court, playing against another British qualification in Evans. A Federer show was spread all across the court and everyone in attendance was in awe of this absolutely genius.

6-4 6-2 6-2 is what the scoreline read after just 1.5 hrs into the match, taking Federer into the 4^th round – a possible encounter with the in-form Dimitrov (who beat Simon). Federer’s service looked better in this match and with a 2-day break before the last week of Wimbledon begins, this is peak time for Federer to bring his ‘A’ game to Wimbledon 2016.

Novak Djokovic vs Sam Querry

In the men’s draw, Novak Djokovic was the last top seed to take the court (not the center court though, due to Federer’s match).

Novak Djokovic took on the USA tennis player Sam Querry (ranked 28). The first set was neck and neck with both the players holding their serve, a tie-break initialized in which Querry was outclassing Djokovic.

At 5-2, Querry missed an easy net point, playing the ball long and giving Djokovic a chance to step back into the match which Djokovic grabbed with both the hands and the last set was tied at 6-6.

Querry though broke Djokovic’s serve and won his, to win the first set 7-6 (6). What followed in the next set grabbed the eyeballs of all the Wimbledon followers as the world no.1 seed in Djokovic was at the end of destruction from Querry’s end, losing 6-1 and trailing 2-0 down, with the rain halting the match. The play will continue on day 6.
