Novak Djokovic vs Sam Querry

We start our day 6 coverage of Wimbledon with the match that is set to grab the headlines in all the dailies all across the globe – perhaps the biggest sporting story from the week gone by, Wimbledon is set to get a new champion this year due to Novak Djokovic’s early exit from the tournament, failing to reach the 4th round of Wimbledon 2016, he was the defending champion.

Djokovic having just won the French Open glory and completing a career slam, coming into this tournament as the favorite to win but his match against Querry comes as a huge upset in the 1st week of the tournament.

The match was halted after the end of 2nd set on day 5 and continued on day 6 with Djokovic playing the 3rd set to stay in the match. As expected, Djokovic looked better than the last evening and served well to maintain his grip on the set; he broke 2 of Querry’s serve and was soon leading 4-0. Querry though fought back with a break but the set went in Djokovic’s favor 6-3.

The 4th set was a sheer set of brilliance from Querry. Many a times during the set he found himself saving break points and crucial game points – it was at these junctures that his perfect ace services brought back the games every time to his favor – Djokovic absolutely clueless on an pertinent return to his service. It was this very art of servicing well under pressure which seized the match for Querry in the tie-break 7-6 (5). Thus ending the hope of a golden slam for Djokovic i.e. all 4 grand slams and 1 olympic gold.

Andy Murray vs John Millman

Andy Murray took on the center court to play against Millman from Australia, a qualified entry into the tournament. The kind of form that Murray has been in; it was hard to see another upset on the cards. Murray’s striking serves, thunderous volleys and a calm temperament (yes, Murray and calm) guided him to an easy win over his opponent.

Sure, he had wobbles at the end of 2nd set which went into a tie-break but once he won in it, the 3rd set saw Murray with a new energy and precision par with excellence. Murray sure looks greatly favorite to seize this year’s Championship, now that Djokovic is out.

Mirza and Hingis vs Friedsam and Siegemund

The Indian-Swiss pair of Mirza and Hingis started their Wimbledon campaign against German pairing of Friedsam and Siegemund. The match was hit by a few umpiring controversies which did give a few moments of frustration from a player that is usually very quiet and sporty i.e. Martina Hingis. Expected though, in Wimbledon – players are ought to be harsh on umpires as quality can’t be compromised.

It was nonetheless a sweeping victory for the Indian-Swiss pair. Winning the first set 6-2, breaking the German pair thrice and keeping to their serve, Sania and Martina looked set to another brilliant start to a grand slam campaign.

The second set was more closely fought with the Germans holding their serve but we had the crucial moment of Hingis-Mirza been broken but they broke back, in the 6th game, they again broke the Germans and this time won their own serve to win the set and with that the match 7-5.
