Wimbledon day 9 was an exhilarating but exhausting tennis ride which comprised of 4 incredible matches and 2 matches out of these 4 went all the way to the 5th set – coincidentally, both the matches were played back to back on the center court and the crowd had no option but to be in awe of such glorifying tennis on display in Wimbledon 2016.

Roger Federer vs Marin Cilic

The big serving Cilic took on the ageing but gracefully i.e. Roger Federer, the tennis ace from Switzerland who is beyond doubt the most legendary tennis star that there has been in tennis for a long time, perhaps even all-time.

Federer is from Switzerland but he finds his 2nd home at the courts of Wimbledon – with the crowd going all out to support their favorite in Roger. The match however had a pendulum swing, against the wish of the crowd as the first 2 sets went in favor of Cilic – who know found himself just inches away from both his feet in a Wimbledon semi.

The first set got into a tie-break with both the players unbroken but some incredible net point misses from Federer and a non-working backhand guided Cilic an easy 6-7 (4) victory in the first set. The second set saw Federer getting broken early and Cilic never allowed him to get back into the set, squeezing past the Swiss 2-0 with match running for less than 2 hours, Cilic was eyeing an easy win.

The Swiss legend however was not going to give it up that easy. 2 break of service in the 3rd set and Federer was back into the match with a set to his name – the 3rd set 6-3 in favor of Federer.

The 4th set didn’t leave Federer fans with too many nails to chew as a thrilling tie-break followed after 6-6. It is to crucial to note that it was during this juncture of the match that Federer saved a whopping 3 match points and fought back each time. The tie-break went to 11-9 and a forehand error from Cilic ignited the crowd who saw their favorite Federer equaling at 2 sets to all.

Once Federer won the 4th, the last set was a challenge of fitness and sheer ability to sustain the pressure of the match lasting over 3 hours. Federer broke Cilic twice and won the last set 6-3, an incredible win for the Swiss legend, who will now face Raonic in semi-final.

Jo Wilfred Tsonga vs Andy Murray

An injury hit Tsonga was out of tennis action and majors for around 2 years but this year has seen the old Tsonga reappear. The first set was testimony of Tsonga’s improved gameplay and the trouble that he was posing to Murray was quite visible.

The first set tie-break was exhausting and it went in favor of the home-boy Andy Murray 7-6 (9). It almost felt that if Tsonga lost the first, he’ll lose the momentum and might just easily lose the second and that’s just what happened. A thrashing 1-6 loss meant that Murray was 2 sets up in no time.

Tsonga though showed great resilience and fought back, winning the next 2 sets 6-3 and 6-4, to the other frustration of Murray. Last set though again, was about fitness and that’s an aspect of Murray’s game you can’t second-guess, there’s perhaps no one as fit as Murray on the circuit and he showed why he values fitness so much. A 6-1 win in the last set gave Murray the semi birth, he’ll now face Berdych.

Romas Berdych vs Lucas Pouille

Relatively easy wins for Berdych and Raonic

Tomas Berdych played against the French in Pouille who has had beaten Potro and Tomic to reach the quarter-finals. Just into the 3rd game and the sheer court reach of Berdych to play a net point, running in from the baseline and seizing the point hinted at what was to come in front of the French – that didn’t change through the match and Berdych won in 3 sets 7-6 (4) 6-3 6-2.

Milos Raonic vs Sam Querrey

Raonic too had dominance in his match against Sam Querry – who played the biggest upset of the tournament by beating Novak Djokovic in 4 sets but this time he was on the other end of winning as he lost to Raonic in 4 sets 6-4 7-5 5-7 6-4. Raonic now qualifies to play Federer in semis, whom he beat 2 years ago at the very same stage of the tournament.
