The day 7 at Wimbledon (A Sunday) is a rare fixture of the tournament as the mid-Sunday is kept as an off for the players and the administrative staff to rest and rejuvenate coming into the final week but due to the showers in the passing week, the tournament was forced to have the mid-Sunday working to complete the pending matches.
Taking court were some crucial seeding in the men’s draw – Kyrgios, Lopez, Tsonga, Isner, Berdych, Zverev. In women’s draw we had the no.1 seed in Serena taking the court to complete her pending match.
Unlike on Saturday, the mid-Sunday did not see any huge upsets coming the way of the top seeds and the results were pretty much as per the expectations.
Nick Kyrgios vs Feliciano Lopez
Nick Kyrgios was the first to start his pending match against Lopez, who won the 2nd set before the play had to be suspended on Saturday evening. The ending bits of the play on Saturday saw Kyrgios absolutely frustrated at his box and shouted them to leave if they couldn’t help him win.
Coming back on day 7, Kyrgios was a changed man. He was serving well, the volleys were going in his favor and the forehand that he’s known for; was seeking him tremendous points. An easy win in the 3rd and 4th set came his way to win 6-3 6-7 (2) 6-3 6-4. Kyrgios will play Murray in round of 16.
Jo Wilfred Tsonga vs Jon Isner
Alongside the matches pending from the previous day, we had a match starting between Jo Wilfred Tsonga and Jon Isner – 2 extremely different players, while Tsonga has a pure game that doesn’t just rely on his service, Isner is someone who can’t do without his amazing bullet serve – it’s the aces that get Isner big wins against some of the top seeds.
As expected the match was a pure marathon, with it lasting around 4.5 hours before we had our end winner in Jo Wilfred Tsonga. The sheer fitness levels of these 2 was amazing; more so Tsonga who was more forced to stretch and play out Isner’s serves. It is crucial to understand that Isner’s game being serve-heavy, he’s weak across the court to play out rallies and therefore Tsonga had it coming easy in that; but breaking Isner is no mean feat.
6-7 (3) 3-6 7-6 (5) 6-2 and 19-17 is a tiresome 4 setter at this phase of Wimbledon where a win takes you to the all-important 2nd week, Tsonga will get great morale boost from this epic win against the American giant. Tsonga will face his French national in Richard Gasquet in next round – keeping an eye out on this terrific match.
Tomas Berdych vs Alexander Zverev
The 10th seed from Czech in Tomas Berdych faced the young German in Zverev, someone who beat Federer in the pre-Wimbledon tournament. Zverev criticized his draw in the tournament, having now been forced to play 3, perhaps even 4 continuous days (should he have beaten Berdych).
Though the youngster is full of potential, Berdych’s experience on the grass court was too tricky for him to handle. Losing the first 2 sets 6-3 6-4, the 3rd set went for Zverev with some good volleys and young feet covering the court with ease, consequently a 4-6 win but the last set was an absolute beating with 6-1 in favor of Berdych, who qualifies for yet another round of 16 at Wimbledon, playing his nation-man Vesely in the next round.
