In the earlier phases of the day’s inception, different patient groups belonging to Middle Eastern Groups and European groups inaugurated the Hepatitis C Day awareness day which was celebrated on October 1, 2004. After many years, in 2008 the World Hepatitis Day was declared to be celebrated on the May 19th in collaboration with global leaders and patient groups.

Finally, a resolution was passed in the 63rd World Health Assembly in 2010, the date of the World Hepatitis Day Date was changed to July 28 so as to honor the Nobel Laureate Baruch Samuel Blumberg who discovered the Hepatitis B Virus. There is no change in date for the celebration since then.
