The short answer

Is Gemini free? Yes. Google’s Gemini app costs $0 with a Google Account and includes image generation, Deep Research, Gemini Live and Canvas. However, since October 2026 most free prompts run on Flash-Lite, Google’s lightest model, and Google publishes no fixed count of free prompts.

  • Free: $0, Auto or Flash-Lite, standard limits, 15 GB of storage
  • Google AI Plus: $4.99 a month, Flash, 2x free limits, video generation, 400 GB
  • Google AI Pro: $19.99 a month, Gemini 4 Argon and Pro, 4x free limits, 5 TB
  • Google AI Ultra: $99.99 or $199.99 a month, 5x or 20x Pro limits
  • Students: eligible US college students can get AI Pro free for a year if they redeem by December 31, 2026

US student offer deadline, 2026

Gemini is Google’s AI assistant, available as an app and on the web. So, is Gemini free in a way that still matters? It is, but the free tier changed sharply in October 2026, which means many guides online now describe a better free plan than the one you will get. This article uses Google’s own plans page and Gemini Apps Help articles, so everything reflects each vendor’s published details rather than our own testing.

Is Gemini Free to Use?

Yes, Gemini is free to use with a Google Account, and no subscription is needed. Google lists the no-plan tier at $0, with image generation and editing, Deep Research, Gemini Live (voice conversation), Canvas (a writing and coding workspace), Gems (custom assistants) and limited access to Google Flow, its filmmaking tool.

That said, three things limit the free tier. First, you can’t pick a model yourself. Second, your limits are the lowest Google offers, and they can tighten first when demand rises. Third, video generation sits behind a paid plan. The tier isn’t a trial, so it doesn’t expire, although Google adds that limits may change without notice.

Is Gemini free to download?

Yes. You can use Gemini at gemini.google.com in a browser, and Google’s release notes also describe a Windows app for Windows 10 and later, along with a macOS app.

Which Model Does Google Gemini Free Use?

Google Gemini free uses Auto or Flash-Lite, and most prompts go to Flash-Lite. According to Google’s About Gemini models help page, Auto sends harder prompts to Flash or Pro when it decides they need more reasoning, but only Google AI subscribers can choose a model by hand. If you turn Auto off, every response uses Flash-Lite.

What changed in October 2026

Until recently, free users could select stronger models themselves. In fact, Google’s release notes show 3.6 Flash rolling out to all Gemini app users in July. Then, starting October 9, 2026, users without a plan lost manual access to Flash and Pro, as 9to5Google reported from Google’s updated support document. So any guide saying the free tier includes Flash or Pro selection is out of date.

What Are the Gemini Free Limits?

Gemini free limits are compute-based, so Google publishes no number of free prompts, images or Deep Research reports per day. Instead, its limits help page calls the free allowance “standard limits,” which refresh every five hours until you reach a weekly limit. Google doesn’t publish the size of either one.

Not all prompts cost the same: Google rates simple chat as very low usage, long conversations and large files as medium, and Deep Research and video as high. To see where you stand, open Settings at gemini.google.com and select Usage Limits.

Watch out. Be careful with articles quoting fixed free allowances, such as five Deep Research reports a month or a few images a day. 9to5Google reported those figures in 2025 and early 2026, before Google moved the Gemini app to compute-based limits in May 2026.

Is Gemini free unlimited?

No. Every Gemini tier has limits, and Google’s help page warns that users without a plan may be limited before subscribers if capacity changes.

Does Gemini make free images and videos?

Gemini makes free images, but not free videos. Google’s image generation page lists Nano Banana 2 as free, while the newer Nano Banana 2.1 requires a plan. Also, Gemini-made visuals carry a visible watermark along with an invisible SynthID marker. Video generation starts at AI Plus. For other options, see our list of the best free AI image generators.

Gemini Free vs Google AI Plus, Pro and Ultra

Gemini Free suits light use, AI Plus adds Flash and video cheaply, AI Pro unlocks Gemini 4 Argon and 5 TB of storage, and AI Ultra serves very heavy users. Google states every usage multiple relative to another tier, so the table keeps that wording.

Watch out. If you are buying AI Plus for Pro models, stop and read this first. Google’s email to subscribers says that from November 13, 2026, choosing Pro models will be limited to AI Pro and above, according to 9to5Google. Google’s models page still lists Pro under Plus as of November 7.

Each paid plan can also be shared with up to five family members, according to Google One.

What Is Locked on the Gemini Free Plan?

The Gemini Free plan locks manual model selection, Gemini 4 Argon, video generation and Daily Brief. Here is what each level opens up, according to Google’s plans page.

  • From AI Plus: Flash selection, video generation, Daily Brief, Gemini in Gmail and Vids, and 200 Flow credits
  • From AI Pro: Gemini 4 Argon, Pro models after November 13, Chrome auto browse, Gemini in Docs, and Tasks in Gemini
  • AI Ultra only: Project Genie, the highest Antigravity coding limits and a full YouTube Premium plan

Is Gemini Free for Students?

Yes, in the US, Gemini’s paid AI Pro plan is free for a year for eligible college students. Google’s student offer page says US college students aged 18 or older can redeem it by December 31, 2026.

  • What you get: AI Pro for one year, with 4x limits, 5 TB of storage and Gemini Omni access
  • What it’s worth: about $240, by our arithmetic at $19.99 a month
  • The catch: a valid payment method is required, and the plan then costs $19.99 a month unless you cancel
  • Who qualifies: new users, plus students whose 2025 AI Pro trial has expired; you must verify eligibility every year
  • Outside the US: Google’s release notes list a free year of AI Plus for eligible students in more than 140 countries

Pro tip. Put a calendar reminder about 11 months after you redeem, since the plan renews automatically at the full price. Also, Google’s India page says school-issued accounts aren’t eligible, so check the terms for your country.

This deal compares well with OpenAI’s, whose US student offer closed on October 31, as our guide to whether ChatGPT is free explains. For more options, see our roundup of free AI tools for students, and teachers can check our AI tool picks for teachers.

Can You Get Google AI Pro Free Another Way?

Yes, some devices bundle a temporary AI Pro trial. For example, Google’s Pixel 11 announcement says the Pixel 11 Pro, Pro XL and Pro Fold include six months of AI Pro for eligible US buyers, valued at $119.94, and the offer must be redeemed by October 31, 2027.

These trials are not identical to the paid plan. According to 9to5Google, trial accounts don’t get YouTube Premium Lite until they convert, and they can’t use Gemini 4 Argon in Antigravity.

When Is Paying for Gemini Worth It?

Paying for Gemini is worth it when you need a specific upgrade, such as better models, video or storage, rather than simply more of the same. Our arithmetic puts AI Plus at about $60 a year, AI Pro at about $240, and the lower Ultra tier at about $1,200, all before tax.

Stay on Free: best for occasional questions

Free covers images, Deep Research and voice, so casual users can stop here.

  • Choose it if: you rarely see a limit message, and Flash-Lite’s answers are good enough

AI Plus at $4.99: best low-cost upgrade

AI Plus is the cheapest way to get Flash, video generation and 400 GB of storage.

  • Choose it if: you also need more Google storage, or Gemini in Gmail
  • Skip it if: you want Pro models, which leave this plan on November 13

AI Pro at $19.99: best for most serious users

AI Pro is the first plan with Gemini 4 Argon and Pro, and its 1M-token context handles long documents.

  • Choose it if: you work with long files, or the 5 TB of storage replaces another bill
  • Skip it if: you’re an eligible US student, since you can get it free for a year

AI Ultra from $99.99: best for professional creators and coders

Ultra pays off only for people who use up AI Pro limits on paid work.

  • Choose it if: Flow credits or Antigravity limits constrain your income

Gemini Free vs ChatGPT Free

On paper, Gemini Free looks better for Google users and has the cheaper upgrade, whereas ChatGPT Free looks simpler for long text chats, since OpenAI lists those as unlimited. Still, the fairest test is to run your own real task through both, because neither company publishes much about free capacity.

If neither fits, Anthropic’s Claude offers a third free tier. Our guide to whether Claude AI is free covers its limits, and our AI course picks go further.

Is the Gemini API Free?

Yes, the Gemini API has a free tier for developers, separate from the Gemini app. Google AI Studio’s pricing page lists no charge for input and output tokens on models including 3.8 Flash, 3.6 Flash and 3.5 Flash-Lite. However, Gemini 4 Argon, 3.1 Pro and the image, video and music models aren’t on that tier. Also, Google says free-tier content may be used to improve its products, so avoid sending anything confidential.

Our verdict

Is Gemini free? Yes, and it remains one of the broadest free AI plans, with images, Deep Research and voice at no cost. Still, the October switch to Flash-Lite makes it a lighter tool than it was a few months ago, and Google won’t say how many prompts you get. Start free, and pay only for a clear need. For most people who do upgrade, AI Pro at $19.99 is the plan worth having, and eligible US students should claim it free before December 31, 2026.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Google Gemini free to use?

Yes. The Gemini app costs $0 with a Google Account, and no subscription is needed. Free users get Auto or Flash-Lite, image generation and editing, Deep Research, Gemini Live, Canvas and 15 GB of Google storage. Video generation, Gemini 4 Argon and Gemini in Gmail need a paid Google AI plan.

How many prompts do you get on Gemini for free?

Google does not publish a number. Its help page describes free usage as standard limits, based on compute, which refresh every five hours until you reach a weekly limit. Simple chats use very little of the allowance, while Deep Research uses far more. You can check your usage in Settings under Usage Limits.

Does Gemini Free use Flash or Pro?

Mostly not. Since October 9, 2026, users without a plan can’t choose Flash or Pro manually. Google says that with Auto on, most prompts use Flash-Lite, while harder prompts may use Flash or Pro. With Auto off, every response uses Flash-Lite. Only subscribers can pick a model themselves, and Gemini 4 Argon needs AI Pro or Ultra.

How much do Google AI Plus, Pro and Ultra cost?

In the US, Google AI Plus costs $4.99 a month, AI Pro costs $19.99, and AI Ultra costs $99.99 or $199.99 depending on the usage tier. Plus offers twice the free limits and Pro four times, while Ultra offers five or 20 times Pro limits. All plans are for users aged 18 and over.

Is Gemini free for college students?

Yes, for now. Google offers eligible US college students aged 18 or older one free year of Google AI Pro if they redeem by December 31, 2026. A payment method is required, and the plan then costs $19.99 a month unless canceled. Eligible students in more than 140 other countries can get AI Plus instead.

Can Gemini Free make videos?

No. Google’s plans page lists video generation as a paid feature that starts with Google AI Plus at $4.99 a month. Free users do get image generation through Nano Banana 2, along with limited access to Google Flow. Google says video generation consumes the most usage, so paid limits can also run out quickly.
