The short answer

Is ChatGPT free? Yes. OpenAI’s Free plan costs $0, has no set time limit, and includes unlimited text chats with GPT-6, subject to abuse guardrails. However, the free tier runs on the lighter GPT-6 Luna model, can show ads, and puts low caps on uploads, images, voice and deep research.

  • Free: $0, GPT-6 Luna, unlimited text chats, limited tools, ads in supported regions
  • Go: $8 a month, the same Luna model with higher tool limits, and it may still show ads
  • Plus: $20 a month, GPT-6 Sol and advanced reasoning, no ads
  • Pro: tiers at $100, $200 and $500 a month for heavy daily use
  • Not published: OpenAI gives no daily number for free images, voice chats or deep research

ChatGPT is the AI chatbot from OpenAI, the US company that also builds the GPT family of AI models. So, is ChatGPT free in practice, or only until you try to do something useful? This guide separates what OpenAI actually publishes from what it leaves vague, then gives you simple rules for deciding whether to pay. Everything below comes from OpenAI’s own plans and pricing page and its help articles. We have not run our own usage tests, so the details reflect each vendor’s published information.

Is ChatGPT Free to Use?

Yes, ChatGPT is free to use with no end date. OpenAI’s Free plan page says the plan has no set time limit, so it isn’t a trial that later turns into a bill. However, OpenAI’s support documents warn that the default model and limits can change over time, so “free” is a promise about price, not about features.

Is ChatGPT free without an account?

Partly. OpenAI’s October 29, 2026 release note, as reported by MIXED, refers to people who use ChatGPT while signed out. Even so, the Free plan page describes the plan as open to anyone who signs up, so create an account if you want the plan’s listed features.

Which Model Do Free ChatGPT Users Get?

Free ChatGPT users get GPT-6 Luna, and OpenAI’s own pricing page confirms it. Specifically, the page lists GPT-6 Luna and GPT-5 Thinking Mini for the Free plan, plus “unlimited text chats with GPT-6.”

The rollout began on October 8, 2026 for Free and Go, one day after Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise, according to the GPT-6 announcement on the OpenAI Developer Community. Importantly, paying plans run GPT-6 Sol, not Luna. So “free users have GPT-6” is true, but it does not mean they have the same GPT-6 as subscribers.

An October 29 release note said GPT-6 answers for Free, Go and signed-out users would become more concise, in order to “reduce overly flattering language,” according to MIXED.

What Are the ChatGPT Free Limits?

The ChatGPT free limits are simple for text and vague for everything else. Text chats have no published cap, whereas uploads, images, voice and deep research are capped, and OpenAI publishes a number for only some of them. The table shows exactly where the numbers stop.

Feature on FreeWhat OpenAI saysNumber published?
Text chatsUnlimited, subject to abuse guardrailsNo ceiling stated
File uploads3 per day, and may be lowered at peak timesYes

Codex and ChatGPT WorkLimited, desktop onlyNo
Source: chatgpt.com/pricing and OpenAI’s file upload FAQ. Checked November 7, 2026.

OpenAI’s Free Tier FAQ says separate limits apply to each tool, and ChatGPT tells you when you reach one. In addition, the tool can stay unavailable until the limit resets. So any exact figure you see for free daily images is not coming from the plan page.

Is ChatGPT free unlimited?

Only for ordinary text chat, and even that carries a condition. OpenAI doesn’t define where “abuse guardrails” begin, so nobody outside the company can tell you the real ceiling. Also, older guides that quote a message count per five hours likely predate the August 2026 change that made free text chats unlimited, so treat those charts as out of date.

Can free ChatGPT make images or videos?

Free ChatGPT can make images, but only in limited amounts, and OpenAI’s Codex pricing page describes free image generation as slower. Video generation doesn’t appear on the current pricing page for any plan, so don’t count on it. If images are your main goal, our list of the best free AI image generators compares tools built for that job.

ChatGPT Free vs Go vs Plus vs Pro

ChatGPT Free suits light use, Go adds capacity without a better model, Plus adds better models and removes ads, and Pro suits people who work in ChatGPT all day. Prices below come from OpenAI’s pricing documentation, while features come from the plans page.

How much is ChatGPT Go, and what does it really add?

ChatGPT Go costs $8 a month in the US and adds capacity rather than intelligence. OpenAI’s pricing table shows the same GPT-6 Luna model as Free, plus more uploads, more images, more voice chats and a longer memory.

What do Plus and Pro add?

ChatGPT Plus at $20 a month is the first tier with GPT-6 Sol, custom GPTs, ChatGPT Work on the web and mobile, and no ads. Above that, Pro starts at $100 a month and offers three usage tiers, along with Dots (an always-on agent) and monthly API credits. OpenAI’s Pro help article lists Pro 100 at $100, Pro 200 at $200 and Pro 500 at $500 a month, and says Pro 200 is open to new subscribers again.

Does Free ChatGPT Have Ads?

Yes, free ChatGPT can show ads. OpenAI’s Ads in ChatGPT help article says ads appear for Free and Go users only, where the program is available, while Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu accounts stay ad-free.

  • Who doesn’t see them: accounts identified as under 18, and anyone using Temporary Chat
  • Effect on answers: OpenAI says ads don’t influence the responses and that conversations stay private from advertisers

Pro tip. You don’t have to pay to remove ads. Where the option is available, Free users can open Settings, go to Ads controls, choose “Change plan to go ad-free,” and accept reduced limits. That lowers your usage and tool access.

Watch out. Upgrading to Go is not the way to escape ads. OpenAI’s Go page states that the plan “may include ads,” so Plus is the cheapest paid plan that OpenAI lists as ad-free.

What Is Locked on the ChatGPT Free Plan?

The ChatGPT Free plan locks the stronger GPT-6 Sol model, scheduled tasks, voice with video, sites, developer mode and the agent features. Search, Study mode, projects, skills, plugins and the built-in browser are all included, according to the pricing page.

  • Stronger models: GPT-6 Sol and GPT-6.1 Sol start at Plus, and Pro reasoning needs Pro
  • Automation: scheduled tasks start at Go, while Dots needs Pro
  • Building: custom GPTs and sites are listed from Plus, and developer mode is also a paid feature
  • Coding: Free covers quick Codex tasks with GPT-6 Luna in the desktop app, subject to rollout

Is ChatGPT Free for Students, Teachers or Veterans?

ChatGPT is free for students only in the sense that the Free plan is free for everyone, since OpenAI’s latest student deal has closed. However, verified US K-12 teachers get a free plan through June 2027, and some US service members have had a separate offer.

  • US college students: the 2026 Back to School offer gave four free months of Plus to verified students, but the claim deadline was October 31, 2026. A replacement has not been announced as of November 7, 2026.
  • K-12 teachers: OpenAI’s pricing page lists ChatGPT for Teachers as a free plan for verified US K-12 educators through June 2027.
  • Service members and veterans: OpenAI announced a free year of Plus for US service members and veterans within 12 months of retirement or separation. That announcement is about a year old, so confirm it’s still open before relying on it.
  • Universities: ChatGPT Edu is a plan schools buy, so ask your IT department whether you already have access.

Students who missed the deadline still have options. Google’s student offer is open until December 31, 2026, as our guide to whether Gemini is free explains, and our roundup of free AI tools for students covers more choices.

When Is Paying for ChatGPT Worth It?

Paying for ChatGPT is worth it when a specific limit keeps stopping real work. As a yardstick, our own arithmetic puts Go at $96 a year, Plus at $240 a year and the lowest Pro tier at $1,200 a year, all before tax.

Stay on Free: best for casual everyday use

Text chat has no published cap, so casual users rarely need more.

  • Choose it if: you mostly write, ask questions and summarize short text

Go at $8: best for hitting tool caps

Go fits only if uploads, images or voice run out often and you can live with ads.

  • Choose it if: capacity is your problem, and Luna’s answers already satisfy you
  • Skip it if: you want smarter answers, since the model stays the same

Plus at $20: best for regular serious use

Plus is the first real step up in quality, and it also removes ads.

  • Choose it if: you need GPT-6 Sol, more deep research or custom GPTs

Pro from $100: best for all-day professional use

Pro only pays off when ChatGPT, Codex or ChatGPT Work is part of your daily job.

  • Choose it if: you keep hitting Plus limits during paid work
  • Skip it if: you can’t point to income or hours that it would return

Common mistakes to avoid

  1. Buying Go for better answers. OpenAI’s table lists the same main model as Free.
  2. Assuming unlimited covers tools. It covers text chat only.
  3. Waiting on an expired deal. The US student offer closed on October 31, 2026.

What Are the Best Free ChatGPT Alternatives?

The strongest free ChatGPT alternatives are Google Gemini, Anthropic’s Claude and Microsoft Copilot, all of which have a $0 tier. Because none of them is unlimited across every feature, the fairest test is to run the same real task through two free plans before paying for one.

ToolFree modelPublished limitBest for
Google GeminiAuto or Flash-LiteRefreshes every 5 hours, up to a weekly limitGoogle users, free image generation
Anthropic ClaudeSonnet and HaikuLimited on 5-hour and weekly cyclesWriting and long documents

Our verdict

Is ChatGPT free? Yes, and for everyday text questions it is genuinely generous, since GPT-6 Luna comes with no published message cap. Still, ads, low tool limits and the gap between Luna and Sol make it a starter tier for serious work. Start free, and upgrade only when a particular limit keeps blocking you. For most people who do pay, Plus at $20 is the plan that changes the experience, because Go adds room rather than a better model.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is ChatGPT free to use?

Yes. OpenAI’s Free plan costs $0 and has no set time limit, so it is not a trial. It includes unlimited text chats with GPT-6 subject to abuse guardrails, plus limited uploads, image creation, voice chats and deep research. Ads can appear in supported regions, and stronger models require a paid plan.

Do free ChatGPT users get GPT-6?

Yes, but not the same version as subscribers. OpenAI’s pricing page lists GPT-6 Luna for the Free and Go plans, while Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise run GPT-6 Sol. The rollout to Free and Go users began on October 8, 2026, one day after the paid plans received it.

What is the ChatGPT free daily limit?

OpenAI publishes no daily limit for free text chats, which it describes as unlimited subject to abuse guardrails. Its file upload FAQ lists three uploads per day, which may drop at peak times. However, OpenAI gives no exact numbers for free images, voice chats or deep research, describing each simply as limited.

What is the difference between ChatGPT Free and Go?

ChatGPT Go costs $8 a month and uses the same GPT-6 Luna model as Free, according to OpenAI’s pricing table. Go adds more uploads, more images, more voice chats, longer memory, a 54K context window and scheduled tasks. Since Go may include ads, it buys extra capacity rather than better answers or an ad-free chat.

Is ChatGPT Plus free for students?

Not right now. OpenAI’s 2026 Back to School offer gave verified US college students four free months of Plus, but the deadline to claim it was October 31, 2026. No replacement has been announced as of November 7, 2026. Students can still use the regular Free plan, and some universities provide ChatGPT Edu.

Can you remove ads from free ChatGPT?

Sometimes. OpenAI’s help article says Free users can choose an ad-free option under Ads controls in Settings, where available, in exchange for reduced message limits and less tool access. Otherwise, Plus and Pro have no ads. Go does not solve the problem, because OpenAI says the plan may include ads.
