Ganga Dussehra 2019 History

The origin of the Ganga Dussehra dates back to the Vedic times. It is believed that when the sons of King Bhagirath were killed by Sage Kapila, the River Ganges were flown down from Heaven to Earth to purify their ashes. The story dates back to the times when 60,000 sons of King Sagara were sent to chase a horse who went into the cave where Sage Kapila was meditating.

Sage Kapila got disturbed and cursed the sons to reduce to ashes and dusts. After many years, the great grandson of King Sagara decided to perform a ceremony and thus he prayed to Lord Vishnu for water after which Lord Vishnu asked him to pray to Lord Shiva who would allow the mighty river Ganges to go through his head locks. The Ganges flowed down to Earth and purified the ashes of the 60,000 sons of Sagara.

It is believed that on this day, people visit the city of Haridwar, Kanpur, Varanasi to take a dive in the river Ganges to get rid of their sins. People also make charities and donations so as to wash get rid of bad omens.
